first_imgLONDON (AP):Leicester had little to celebrate last Christmas. Languishing in last place in the Premier League, the team was facing instant relegation back to the second tier. Now Leicester are looking down on everyone. From propping up the league, Leicester have surged to the pinnacle inside 12 months and rivals are trying to figure out how to replicate their feat. It has not been accomplished by a spending splurge but through astute bargain buys far expecting expectations and a managerial change that had most pundits forecasting a relegation struggle. The turnaround is as astonishing and unforeseen as Chelsea’s collapse from champions to a team now hovering above the relegation zone. When Leicester beat the champions earlier this month it no longer seemed such a shock, although it cost Jose Mourinho his Chelsea job.The tale of the two clubs and their contrasting fortunes is the biggest surprise in the history of the Premier League.”I don’t know how it’s possible,” Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri reflected this week. “I think it’s a fantastic achievement. If I understood very well, never at this time was Leicester top of the league.”This team, based in an east Midlands city better known for its textiles industry and rugby side, has never won the top prize in English football. Not in the post-1992 Premier League era or any time stretching back into the 19th century. The only major honour Leicester have ever collected is the League Cup, with the third and most recent triumph coming in 2000.Aware how close Leicester came to being relegated last season under Nigel Pearson – before a stunning late revival that was not enough to keep him in a job – Ranieri has cooled fan expectations. The target for this season remains reaching the 40-point mark that should guarantee a place in the Premier League next season. That can be achieved at the halfway point today when a win at Liverpool would lift Leicester to 41 points. As Leicester have remained among the front-runners throughout the season, the widespread expectation has been it was a matter of if – not when – Leicester start to slip down the standings. Two matches from the halfway point and everyone is still waiting. The whole season has been one long mission in defying the critics. Leicester were considered foolish for plucking Ranieri from the ranks of unemployed coaches to replace Pearson in July. It had been 11 years since he had managed in England with Chelsea – during which he was often labelled “The Tinkerman” for constantly changing the starting line up – and he had been out of work since an embarrassing spell in charge of the Greece national team.”I am waiting for when people change my nickname from ‘Tinkerman’ to ‘Thinkerman,'” quipped Ranieri, whose avuncular and calm demeanour contrasts with the league’s more erratic coaches. One thing Ranieri does not own up to thinking about is lifting the trophy for the world’s richest football competition in May.”I think we aren’t ready to fight to be champions,” he said, even as Leicester sit two points in front of Arsenal and six ahead of Manchester City.In the off season, Leicester’s net spending of around $30 million was one sixth of Manchester City’s outlay.”We don’t have the high quality like City, Arsenal, but we fight together,” Ranieri said. “Every ball for us is the last ball. That’s what we believe.”last_img read more

first_imgThe Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Tags:#Facebook Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Related Posts Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification markhachman At the end of 2011, Facebook began adding “Sponsored Stories,” or ads, to the News Feed. Of late, the company has been asking users to pay to promote their posts, on the order of $7 or so for ordinary users. Things came to a head earlier this week, when Nick Bilton of the New York Times essentially accused Facebook of encouraging a pay-to-play scheme. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban also said he had been encouraged to pay Facebook to increase the number of people who would see his posts. At the time, Facebook denied the charges, saying its algorithms have made recent attempts to focus more on higher-quality stories, and that engagement was actually up for social media figures with more than 10,000 followers.Somewhat surprisingly, the topic didn’t come up during the main question-and-answer session at Facebook’s rollout of the new News Feed at its Menlo Park headquarters on Thursday. But Facebook executives said privately that the new “Following” feed solves the problem.Facebook: The Pay-To-Play Problem Is Solved“At a high level, we’re trying to help each person to get exactly the posts they want, and that differs from person to person,” Christopher Cox, vice president of product at Facebook, said in an interview. “The tricky part for Pages and content publishers on a large scale is that on the one hand, [there’s] too much page spam in my feed, and on the other hand, I want everybody to see every post I have. And those two things are irreconcilable.”“What we’re trying to do is move the front page forward in a way that minimizes the amount of spam people feel they’re getting, but also helps publishers increase their audience,” Cox said. “The nice thing is that with the Following feed is that you’re going to have a place where people can go and check out the people that they’re following. And it will be easier for a journalist to say, ‘You want to see my stuff? Go here.’”As Cox said publicly, the main News Feed will also include posts from people and publishers that a user has historically engaged with. “So if you typically click on a lot of Thomas Friedman posts, you’ll still see a lot of Thomas Friedman,” Cox said.Placing publishers, friends, “close friends”, and others in their own feeds is certainly reminiscent of another social network, Google+, which uses the concept of user-grouped “Circles” to organize what its users see. Facebook’s new Feeds are a step back in the direction of algorithmic choice, in that Facebook is still deciding what content to surface to the user. But by also organizing them by topic, Facebook is aligning more with its users, and how they search for social media. The problem, of course, is that the new feeds really don’t eliminate the personal “pay-to-play” problem, where a user that is desperate to tell the world that his cat is missing, for example, can’t be sure that all of his friends and family will actually see the post. In that case, pay-to-play may be the only viable solution. But at least Nick Bilton should be happier. Worried that you might miss an update to Facebook Pages you subscribe to? Or are you concerned that your legions of followers aren’t seeing your shared stories? Either way, Facebook has an answer: its new “Following” feed.On Thursday, Facebook updated its News Feed with a new look that emphasizes photos prominently, shares a common look and feel with the Facebook mobile apps, and breaks out undates into separate sections, or feeds. For now, Facebook is highlighting feeds that include photos, games, music, “all friends,” “close friends,” and the “Following” feed, which includes those brands and people that have enabled followers, allowing userswho aren’t actually friends to monitor their posts anyway. In practice, the new feeds slice the normal News Feed into different sections, highlighting more updates in a given category. In using the new News Feed layout, I saw a few more photos in the Photo feed, for example, than I saw in my general News Feed.Feed MeThat also seems to be the case within the other new Feeds, which may help alleviate concerns that Facebook is engaging in “pay-to-play” tactics. Of course, some users may look at the new Feeds as a walled garden of sorts, where subscribers will have to specifically seek out new material publishers are posting.last_img read more

first_imgPakistan kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the semifinals of the World Twenty20 tournament beating Australia by 32 runs in their final Super Eights tie at the R Premadasa Stadium here Tuesday. The Aussies, however, qualified for the last four on the basis of the net run rate.Put in to bat, Pakistan made 149/6 in their allotted 20 overs with young middle-order batsman Naser Jamshed (55) scoring his second half-century of the tournament — the first one (56) coming against New Zealand Sep 23.Wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal (32) provided good support to Jamshed after the Asian giants were 29/2 in the sixth over, when Imran Nazir (14) got caught by Aussie skipper George Bailey on the bowling of Shane Watson.Australia kept taking wickets at regular intervals which kept the Pakistani run rate in check, limiting them to a sub-150 score.All-rounder Abdul Razzaq (22) played a small cameo in the end to push the Pakistani score.Mitchell Starc starred with the ball clinching three wicket in his four overs, giving away only 20 runs.All-rounder Shane Watson, Pat Cummins and Xavier Doherty also chipped in with a wicket each. With 150 to chase at a run rate of 7.5 per over, Australia started poorly, losing both openers for eight. Man-in-form Watson and David Warner were both trapped in front of the wicket by the fifth over.Australia could never recover from there and lost wickets at regular intervals. The Pakistani spin trio of Saeed Ajmal, Raza Hasan and skipper Mohammed Hafeez wreaked havoc upon the Australian top order, together taking all seven wickets restricting Australia to 117/7.Michael Hussey (54 not out) was the only batsman who tried to propel the Aussie innings, but kept losing partners at regular intervals. With the win, Pakistan improved their head-to-head in T20Is against Australia to 7-4.For Pakistan to qualify for the semifinals, South Africa must beat India. If India win, then net run-rates will come into effect.Brief scores:Pakistan: 149 for 6 in 20 overs (Nasir Jamshed 55, Kamran Akmal 32; Mitchell Starc 3/20, Shane Watson 1/23).Squads:Australia: Shane Watson, David Warner, Mike Hussey, George Bailey (c), Cameron White, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade, Brad Hogg, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Xavier Doherty.Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez (c), Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal and Raza Hasan.advertisementlast_img read more

first_imgBETHEL, Alaska — Officials in a western Alaska city have been given the go-ahead to apply for a state public transit grant despite missing the deadline. The Bethel City Council voted Tuesday to apply for the $300,000 grant after residents warned that the city’s bus service would stop in June 2020 if action is not taken, KYUK-AM reported .The grant application was due to the state Department of Transportation on Dec. 17. The grant requires a city match of $80,000.The state grant would fund a new bus, a full-time transit manager, and a part-time and full-time driver.Tundra Women’s Coalition Executive Director Eileen Arnold urged the council to apply, saying the bus system is vital for people who cannot afford a cab or cannot walk long distances in subzero temperatures.“As the executive director of TWC, we are huge users of the bus system, perhaps the largest one,” Arnold said. “It’s really important for the people who are in our shelter.”Bethel resident Susan Charles said she has taken the bus since it started operating in Bethel. Continuing to fund the system makes sense, she said.“We need to get to work, and go home for lunch, and whatever we need to do — go shopping, go to the post office — and the bus system provides that for us here in Bethel,” Charles said.___Information from: KYUK-AM, http://www.kyuk.orgThe Associated Presslast_img read more

first_imgNew Delhi: Surrey’s Will Jacks blazed his way to a 25-ball century, including six sixes in an over, during a pre-season T10 clash with Lancashire in Dubai. In all, he smashed eight boundaries and 11 sixes. After producing the brutal assault on Thursday, the batsman said that he was looking to play shots from the first ball. “From the first ball I just tried to play my shots, after the first few overs my intention was to try and hit every ball for six, and I think after four sixes I thought, ‘I could hit six sixes here’. I had never done it before and it was nice to do that and something I will cherish,” the International Cricket Council quoted Jacks as saying. Had the match been accorded official status, Jasks’ effort would have been bettered Chris Gayle’s world record for the fastest century in competitive cricket, achieved in the 2013 IPL, by five balls. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over ChandigarhJacks hit Stephen Parry for six sixes in an over on the way to his ton. He also passed the top score of 87 for the 10-over format achieved by Alex Hales last year. Jacks first reached his fifty off just 14 deliveries and then smashed six consecutive sixes to bring up his century. Jacks’ knock powered Surrey to 176 and a 95-run win over Lancashire. The 20-year-old Jacks made his debut for Surrey in first-class, List A and T20 last season, scoring 121 off 100 balls in a Royal London Cup match against Gloucestershire. The match between Surrey and Lancashire was a pre-season fixture for both the teams, who are gearing up for the county season, which begins next month. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced laterEven though Jacks’ innings will not be mentioned in the official record books, it is still commendable as it came against a Lancashire side comprising several first-team regulars such as Steven Croft, Parry, Tom Bailey, and Haseeb Hameed. Caribbean batsman Chris Gayle currently holds the record for the fastest individual century which came in just 30 deliveries against Pune Warriors during an IPL match in 2013. Gayle had then played an unbeaten knock of 175 off 66 deliveries, which included 13 fours and 17 sixes, helping his team post a mammoth 263/5 in 20 overs. Former South Africa cricketer AB de Villiers, however, holds the record for the quickest century in international cricket. The left-handed batsman scored a 31-ball century against West Indies in an ODI match in 2015.last_img read more

first_imgThe Sterling Highway is now open while the Skilak Lake Road remains closed. Construction will resume on the highway and pilot cars and flaggers will be used in these areas. Continue to drive with caution in the fire area. Minimal fire activity with isolated pockets of torching with some surface fire was reported on the fire line yesterday. Similar fire behavior is expected for today’s operations. Yesterday, a new fire progression map was made. Note, that the acreage on that map was not updated to our current 162,328. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Update 6:55am:Last night an infrared flight was flown. This flight indicated an increase in 149 acres. The Swan Lake Fire in now 162,328 acres. Original Post: 6am: The Swan Lake Fire remains at 162,179 acres with 719 personnel assigned, and at 29% containment. Firefighters are utilizing the overnight moisture to assist in mop up operations to further contain the fire. Dan Nelson, Incident Manager with the Kenai Peninsula Borough: “Make sure that you are ready to evacuate or take action as needed. However, this shows a good significant shift in fire behavior, and it  show that the crews have made good progress in getting those areas contained.”  Chainsaw and mop up operations are being conducted on the southwest side near Sterling to clean up tree debris along the fires edge from past wind events, so be aware when driving through the area. Travelers will see smoke and downed trees while passing through the fire area. Fire crews may also be working along the road cleaning up trees that have fallen so drivers are encouraged to drive safely and remain alert. The reduced fire activity allows firefighters to build line closer to the fire’s edge, south of Resurrection Pass Trail. The priority is to reduce potential fire spread toward Cooper Landing, if fire activity picks up again. Chipping operations will continue in the Cooper Landing area to reduce slash and larger debris material.A joint community meeting was held in both Sterling and Cooper Landing last night to update the  residents on the current status of the fire and the downgrade of evacuation status for both communities. All restrictions for outdoor activities due to air quality, and activity related travel between Sterling and Cooper Landing on Sterling Highway were removed effective on Tuesday for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. Cooper Landing School will reopen Wednesday on a normal schedule. In a letter from the district, thank you to everyone for your patience throughout the past 14 days while these restrictions were in place for student and staff safety.last_img read more
