Gov. Jerry Brown signed two bills into law Thursday that ban California employers and universities from requesting access to applicants’ social media accounts, making California the state with the strictest social media privacy laws.Assembly Bill 1844, written by Assemblywoman Nora Campos, prohibits employers from asking for social media usernames and passwords from current employees and job candidates. Senate Bill 1349, written by Senator Leland Yee, prohibits public and private California universities from asking students or prospective students to disclose their usernames and passwords.Appropriately, Brown announced the signing of the two measures on his Twitter account.California is the fourth state to enact such a ban. Earlier this year, Maryland and Illinois passed laws protecting worker privacy, and Delaware passed a similar law for students. California, however, is the first state to apply the ban to both employers and universities.Brown said he saw California as a trendsetter in the matter.“California pioneered the social media revolution,” Brown posted on Facebook. “These laws protect Californians from unwarranted invasions of their social media accounts.”Karen North, director of the Annenberg Program on Online Communities and an expert in social media and Internet privacy, agreed with the governor.“We are so big and powerful in California, we can be precedent-setting,” North said. “The rest of the country looks to us to make decisions about the digital experience.”Close to a dozen states around the country are currently considering their own social media privacy bills, including New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. The bills are especially relevant in the middle of an era of increasing social media presence in college and job applications. Some companies require candidates to undergo “shoulder surfing” — systematically clicking through their Facebook account under the supervision of an employer — during interviews. A few colleges, such as the University of North Carolina, also require student-athletes to give their Facebook passwords to school officials.According to North, companies and universities want to use social media to get an “accurate representation” of potential candidates.“If they can peer into the individual’s private life — the life that is not influenced by professional pressures — they can get a better sense of who the applicant is,” North said. The bills, however, do not prohibit companies or universities from looking up applicants online or from viewing applicant’s Facebook profiles if they are public.North said she would still advise that regardless of new legislation, students to be wary of what they post online.“Anything you do on social media, you should consider it to be public,” she said. “It’s way too easy these days [for companies] to see your digital imprint on the world.”Some students, such as Chris Lee, a junior majoring in business administration, agreed with the bills with a few caveats.“I don’t want USC or any other school invading my privacy, but they should still be able to check for stuff that might harm the university,” Lee said.In fact, employers can still ask for social media information if it is relevant to an investigation and colleges can still “protect against and investigate alleged student misconduct or violations of applicable laws and regulations,” according to SB 1349.When asked if he would still attend USC if the school required him to divulge his Facebook password, Lee was hesitant.“Probably not,” he said. “But maybe for a job I would.”Come Jan. 1, that should not be a problem.

The Youth and Sports Ministry has quickly moved to calm heads in the various sporting associations after some publicly stated there were not going to participate at this year’s All Africa Games in Congo, Brazzaville.Over 30 associations last week told government that if no funds were released by May 15, they would consider quitting the Games. But after a meeting with the sector minister on Tuesday, all issues have been sorted and the teams have decided to go on with preparations.“The Minister has promised that he is going to make sure all the challenges and outstanding issues we have mentioned to him will be sorted,” said Ben Nunoo Mensah, head of the Ghana Weightlifting Association.“In fact some of things we told him sounded strange because he couldn’t believe for a period over three years individuals were spending their private money to take care of the national teams of those disciplines.“For us he is a new man who has just taken over and I think we will give him the benefit of the doubt and eventually we will all get prepared and go to the All Africa Games.” Meanwhile, the minister, Dr Mustapha Ahmed in an exclusive chat with Joy Sports noted he intends to meet the sporting associations regularly to share ideas on how they can participate well in their respective future competitions.“I have agreed with them (the sporting associations) that we will institutionalize regular meetings so that when we meet regularly and frequently and we discuss our common issues and challenges, the suspicion that arise when there is a communication gap between two parties will be minimized or disappear altogether,” said Dr Ahmed“Having done that I have the impression that the threat of a boycott is no longer in existence and that we will work as a team, support and open with one another and will work transparently to promote the various sporting disciplines.”–

The Market Square of Letterkenny is set to get a makeover to make it a more inviting space for people to meet in the town centre. The public will be asked for their thoughts on how the square should be redesigned and what function it will serve. The Letterkenny Chamber has initiated a design competition for the space and the project is being assisted by the local council. Whether it becomes a working market again, a culture space, or a car park, will depend on the public consultations.Local Councillors Gerry McMonagle and Michael McBride both raised the issue with the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District on Tuesday.Cllr McMonagle said that the Market Square has become a major talking point among locals, while a lot of anti-social behaviour has been happening in the area recently. He suggested that a public consultation will give everyone an opportunity to have their say on the design. Cllr Michael McBride added that during his election canvassing he “didn’t meet one person who said they liked the Letterkenny Market Square and wanted it to say the same.“It’s totally the wrong design for the place it’s in,” Cllr McBride said.“Let’s open it up to make it an inviting space where people want to meet in Letterkenny.”He added that there is an onus on councillors to extended their focus to the restoration of the entire Lower Main Street area in the new term.Cllr Kevin Bradley had also called on the council to install public toilets on the Main Street in Letterkenny. It was suggested that toilets could be placed in a concealed area of the redesigned Market Square. Termas de Río Hondo: Honda’s Marq Marquez set the perfect launch from the pole position to stretch his lead to one second in no time. The defending world champion gathered fearsome pace and was in a lead of three seconds after three laps. By the end of the 10th lap out of 25, Marquez was seven seconds clear which even stretched to 12 seconds towards the later stages. Eventually, he reached the finish line 9.8 seconds ahead of second-placed Valentino Rossi at the Termas de Rio Hondo in Argentina. The battle for the second place was on until the last lap with Andrea Dovizioso showing the power of the mighty Ducati – something which Yamaha definitely needs to work on if they want the championship. Rossi was leading the battle with Dovizioso before running wide in the 7th lap, but he ensured that he was right on the tail throughout. The Italians were being cheered in what proved to be an exquisite display of grit. It was only a few turns away from the finish line when Rossi made his final move to escape past Dovizioso and come home second. Meanwhile, Crutchlow who was expected to be a better competitor for the podium suffered a huge setback due to a jump-start. He managed to finish 13th despite a late entry into the race. Marquez now leads the championship with 45 points followed by Dovizioso (41) and Rossi (31) at second and third respectively – with 17 more races remaining.
New Delhi: Private power producer Tata Power will lead the nation’s renewable energy transition with gradual withdrawal from building new coal fired power plants, a report said. The country’s largest private integrated power company has recently made it clear that it will cease to build new coal-fired power capacity, according to ‘Tata Power: Renewables to Power Growth’ report released by Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) Tuesday. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscalThe report highlights the company’s long-term strategy that will see renewable energy dominate its power capacity build-out going forward. Tata Power’s focus on renewables makes sense given the major energy transformation now occurring, report author Simon Nicholas, Energy Finance Analyst at IEEFA, said in a statement. The company’s Strategic Intent 2025′ plan calls for up to 70 per cent of new capacity additions to come from solar, wind and hydro through to 2025, said Nicholas. Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boostThis represents a significant departure from the accepted wisdom of just a few years ago that a major expansion of coal-fired power would be required to serve India’s growing electricity demand, Nicholas. According to the report, the majority of Tata Power’s thermal capacity is now centred on its Mundra coal-fired power plant – one of the biggest power plants in India – which experienced losses reaching $191 million for the first three-quarters of FY2018-19. The Mundra plant is making consistent, significant losses that are dragging back the company’s overall financial performance, said Nicholas. While a bailout of the plant is being planned, which will increase the tariff burden on consumers and realise a debt write-down for bank lenders, Tata Power has stated it will only halve the losses at Mundra,” said Nicholas Nicholas further said, “Tata Power’s experience at Mundra has helped convince the company to turn away from new coal-fired power. Tim Buckley, IEEFA’s Director of Energy Finance Studies noted that Tata Power’s shift mirrors the transition underway within the Indian power sector as a whole, driven by least cost renewable energy. The shift away from new coal-fired power is moving faster than anyone had predicted, said Buckley. With more than 40 gigawatts of existing coal-fired power plants under financial stress in India, Tata Power is seeking to only add new coal-fired power capacity via fire-sale acquisition, at 30 to 40 per cent of historical investment. It no longer plans to build new coal-fired power plants, the report said.
Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder wrestles Steven Holloway in the dual-meet against Iowa on Jan. 21 in the Schottenstein Center. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorWith two matches remaining, all the No. 2 Ohio State wrestling team needed in order to beat No. 1 Penn State was No. 1 197-pounder Kollin Moore to beat an unranked Nittany Lion and for senior top-ranked heavyweight Kyle Snyder to beat of No. 6 Nick Nevills. But nothing went according to plan.Moore fell to Anthony Cassar in shocking fashion, requiring Snyder to win via major decision in order for the Buckeyes to take home the victory. Though Snyder has won by major decision or a pin in each of his matches this season, he was unable to do so, beating Nevills 15-10 for a decision win. That allowed Penn State to eek by with a 19-18 victory Saturday night.Everything went right for Ohio State early in the meet. No. 4 Nathan Tomasello gave Ohio State the first win of the meet via major decision, beating 125-pounder Carson Kuhn 21-12 after trailing 8-7 following the first period. Ohio State’s No. 2 Luke Pletcher earned a 5-4 decision against Corey Keener at 133 pounds. Then, No. 11 Joey McKenna upset No. 6 Nick Lee to give the Buckeyes a 10-0 lead after the first three matches, which silenced Penn State’s crowd at Rec Hall.Penn State No. 1 149-pounder Zain Retherford and Ohio State No. 5 157-pounder Micah Jordan each earned technical fall wins. The Buckeyes held a 15-5 lead heading into intermission, but that advantage quickly began to slip away.Vincenzo Joseph, one of Penn State’s three top-ranked wrestlers who competed Saturday, dominated No. 14 Te’Shan Campbell with a 12-3 major decision victory. With the lead shrinking, Ohio State needed an upset in one of the next two matches between evenly matched competition. But neither No. 3 Bo Jordan (174 pounds) nor No. 2 Myles Martin (184 pounds) could pull the upset on No. 2 Mark Hall or No. 1 Bo Nickal, respectively.Hall hit a decisive takedown late in the third period to beat Jordan 6-4 and bring Ohio State’s lead down to three. Nickal then dominated Martin, winning with a 10-2 major decision, which gave the Nittany Lions their first lead of the night.Snyder and Moore, both ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes, could not regain the lead for Ohio State. Following Moore’s loss to Anthony Cassar, if Snyder won with a major decision, the Buckeyes would have won the match since they owned the tiebreaker. But on their home mats, the Nittany Lions did exactly what they needed to do to clinch the victory and extend their dual meet win streak to 43.Ohio State will attempt to bounce back from its first loss with a meet against No. 4 Michigan at 6 p.m. Feb. 11.
Chelsea is likely to be Liverpool’s rival for signing Roma’s Alisson Becker after the deadlock talk for a new contract with their current goalie, Thibaut Courtois.Alisson, who was just signed by Roma in 2016, has suddenly caught every big clubs attention due to his impressive performance after guarding his team to the Champions League Semifinal last season. Roma will be apparently quite reluctant in releasing him less than £80 m to all the suitors.Skysports reported that Chelsea has grown frustrated to find Courtois’ potential replacement as the Belgian goalie is likely on his way out of Stamford Bridge. Real Madrid has been presumably his next target. Meanwhile, Alisson seems to be the perfect choice to rise the west London side after disappointing end last season by finishing only on the fifth at the standings and missing out Champions league next season in spite of winning FA Cup against Manchester United at Wembley last June.
