During a meeting with business leaders in Johnson on Wednesday morning, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John Fernandez announced that the Vermont Electrical Cooperative (VEC) will receive an $11.2 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant. Dave Hallquist, CEO of VEC, said the new investment would improve electricity reliability and telecommunications access in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.“This grant award provides VEC with the opportunity to improve reliability and expand the broadband infrastructure for Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom,” said Dave Hallquist, CEO of VEC. “This project will make the region more attractive to new businesses, while strengthening the economic climate for existing businesses, like the furniture industry. Additional benefits will include increased border security and improved service in northern New Hampshire.”“This is a two-part victory for the Northeast Kingdom – improved electricity reliability and an enhanced broadband backbone that will expand the smart grid and broadband access,” said Senator Patrick Leahy, who assisted VEC with its grant application. “The current lines and poles are extremely vulnerable to severe weather, like the heavy snow that fell last week. When an electrical system is vulnerable, so are the people who depend on it — whether we are talking about job-creating furniture manufacturers or Vermonters who need electricity to heat their homes.” Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch also support the project.VEC officials explained the funds will upgrade 5.2 miles of transmission lines and 26 miles of distribution lines, including poles and lines along Vermont Route 102. These routes will connect customers in the Northeast Kingdom to Vermont’s power system and provide redundancy to customers in Coos County, New Hampshire. The funds will also be used to replace a 1920’s-era steel tower line. In addition, VEC will also install fiber optic cables to expand VEC’s existing smart grid system and expand future broadband capabilities in Northeast Kingdom communities. Source: VEC. 5.5.2010
VINTON, Iowa – The first Junior National Champion point standings have been posted on the IMCA website. “No points will be awarded to non-members or to any driver who has not submitted a correct minor release form,” emphasized IMCA President Brett Root, “nor will points be awarded retroactively.” The Junior National Champion gets a trophy, ring and jacket, and will take their turn at the podium speaking during the IMCA banquet in November. Drivers ages 13-18 racing in any of the eight IMCA divisions are eligible to compete for the inaugural title, which will be determined based on their best 20 finishes out of their first 40 starts. Drivers must purchase a 2020 competitor’s license and submit required minor release forms to be eligible. All top 10 drivers in Junior National Champion point standings receive $500 scholarships applicable toward their post-high school education in the first year of the program. Individual scholarship funds will accumulate over multiple seasons and be paid out at one time. Point totals for all drivers vying for the Junior National Champion title will be updated every Friday on the IMCA website and published in the monthly Inside IMCA newsletter. Modified driver Jerry Flippo of Bakersfield, Calif., leads the current Junior National Champion standings.
Not that it should be surprising since the Lakers lost seven of their past eight games. That included a defeat three days earlier to the NBA’s worst team in the New York Knicks, prompting Lakers coach Byron Scott to call his team “soft” and selfish.”“It doesn’t bother me. I could care less one way or the other. It’s not my team,” Scott said about Atlanta resting its players. “Once you get to the point where everything is solidified, then why not rest some guys and get them ready for the playoffs.”The Lakers will not enjoy that typical luxury. So they have shifted focus toward developing their talent. They experienced mixed success in that assessment. First, the good. Lakers forward Ryan Kelly posted a team-leading 13 points albeit on 5-of-12 shooting. Lakers guard Jabari Brown added nine points on 4-of-5 shooting in his second NBA game after starring all season with the Lakers’ Development League affiliate, the D-Fenders. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error The Lakers’ free fall has taken them to unforeseen heights. They have plummeted in the Western Conference standings. They have too many injuries to count. They will miss the NBA playoffs and instead become a contestant in the draft lottery for the second consecutive year. Yet, the Lakers experienced another low in an otherwise uneventful 91-86 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday at Staples Center. The Hawks (52-14) seemed so unthreatened about the Lakers (17-48) that they rested three of their starters, including two All-Stars. Atlanta sat guard Jeff Teague, forward Paul Millsap and forward DeMarre Carroll. All-Star guard Kyle Korver also lasted only 10 minutes after suffering a broken nose at the mercy of Lakers forward Ed Davis inadvertently elbowing him on an offensive foul. But those absences hardly mattered when the Lakers only shot 40 percent from the field and the Hawks’ Dennis Schroder (24 points) and Al Horford (21 points) seemed unstoppable. Then, the bad. The Lakers struggled with their shooting accuracy, most notably from Wayne Ellington (2 of 11), Jordan Hill (3 of 10) and Jordan Clarkson (4 of 13). Though Clarkson recorded a near triple-double with 10 points, a career-high eight rebounds and six assists, his shooting clip marked the second consecutive game he shot below 50 percent.“This is great for him. He needs to keep learning as he goes along each day as he goes along in this league and what people will do against him,” Scott said about Clarkson, who earned praise for his practice preparation. “The best thing about the kid is when he falls, he gets back up. He doesn’t lay down. He gets back up and keeps playing hard.”Clarkson showed that when he set up Carlos Boozer for a jumper that cut the Hawks’ lead to 84-80 with 1:03 remaining. After Horford made one of two fouls hots, Wesley Johnson drilled a corner 3-pointer that cut the Hawks’ lead to 85-83 with 30.1 seconds left. But then Schroder drove past Clarkson for a left-handed layup to extend the Hawks’ cushion to 87-83 with 13.9 seconds left. Moments later, the Hawks secured the victory, handing the Lakers another loss that leaves their upset against Atlanta five months ago a distant memory.
