Softball Sweeps MVC Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards for the Second Time in 2019

LOUIS – Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) of the Drake University softball team is the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for the fifth-consecutive week while Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) is the MVC Player of the Week for the second time in her career, the MVC office announced Monday, April 15. Pena, who is riding a six-game hitting streak, started the week with consecutive multi-hit games, including smashing a double in each win over UNI. She ended the week with a 2-for-3 performance with a three-run home run and scored a pair of runs in an 11-0 win over Loyola. Newman has recorded nine straight complete games where she has struck out 10 or more in each victory. Overall, she is 17-6 with a 1.11 ERA with a nation-best 255 strikeouts. Her win total is tied for the most in the league, her ERA is the best mark in the MVC and her innings pitched (139.1) and opponent batting average (.126) are tops in the Valley. This is her sixth MVC Pitcher of the Week award this season and the 16th in her outstanding career. Last week, Newman continued her impressive pitching going 3-0 without allowing an earned run and throwing her third perfect game of the season and in her career. She pitched the latest perfect game in a 9-0 five-inning victory over Loyola where she struck out 11 Ramblers, including the last six. Her week started with a complete game win over UNI where she allowed the one unearned run and punched out 12 Panthers. Newman’s week ended with a five-inning shutout against Loyola where she scattered four hits and struck out 11. The duo helped Drake go 5-0 on the week with a doubleheader sweep of in-state rival UNI and a three-game series sweep of Loyola. It is the second time this season Drake has swept the weekly player and pitcher award after Newman and Libby Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa) accomplished the feat April 1.center_img Pena, who is tied for the team lead in home runs with five, has 30 RBI and is second on the team in doubles with nine. Her RBI total is the second-most on the squad. Pena won her first player of the week award during the 2018 season. Pena blistered the softball in the five wins, which included three run-rule victories. She batted an impressive .727 (8-for-11) with one home run, three doubles, five runs and 11 runs batted in while compiling a .750 on-base percentage and a 1.273 slugging percentage.
