Virat Kohli returns to drop Shane Watson, recall Chris Gayle

first_imgRoyal Challengers Bangalore fans were left shocked and dazed when stand-in skipper Shane Watson had dropped Chris Gayle against Kings XI Punjab in the third match of their IPL 2017 campaign. (RCB vs MI Blog | Scorecard)Many questioned the wisdom of that move further when RCB imploded despite a breathtaking, unbeaten 89 from AB de Villiers. The South African ace found no support from anyone else in the line-up as KXIP restricted them to a modest total and then chased it down without fuss. (Points Table)However, parity seems to have been restored in the Bangalore order with the return of Virat Kohli, who had missed the first three matches due to a shoulder injury sustained in the Ranchi Test against Australia last month.Gayle has 3464 runs in 94 matches and all five of his hundreds have come for RCB. He had a coupe of bad games this year, prompting Watson to drop him for the clash against KXIP.However, Watson himself did not set IPL 2017 on fire with only 43 runs in three matches. Kohli is known to be in awe of Gayle and the two are great friends. So it was no surprise when the first thing Kohli did was to get Gayle back in to the line-up at the expense of Watson.Kohli also included West Indian leg-spinner Samuel Badree for another Australian Billy Stanlake. So, that’s what Kohli has done immediately after taking charge – two West Indians in, two Australians out. On a lighter note, didn’t Kohli say he was no longer friends with the Aussies?advertisementlast_img
