Snow Has Fallen in a Hawaii State Park for Perhaps the First

first_img As a winter storm bore down on the Hawaii islands early Monday, officials are warning residents of gusty winds, rain, high surf, and a rarer sight: snow.Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks is reporting that “for perhaps the first time ever, snow has fallen in a Hawaii State Park.”“Polipoli State Park on Maui is blanketed with snow. It could also be the lowest elevation snow ever recorded in the state. Polipoli is at 6200 feet elevation,” the DLNR said in a press release posted on their Facebook page. We don’t know yet the extent of sand loss on north-facing beaches,” said DLNR Chair Suzanne Case. The DLNR said the forecasters were “spot on” with their predictions. “They’re calling this an unprecedented event and we concur that we rarely if ever have seen the combination of record high on-shore waves, coupled with gale force winds,” said Sam Lemmo, administrator of the DLNR Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, which is particularly concerned about the possible impacts of wave inundation and shoreline retreat undercutting the foundations of some north shore homes, already under siege from previous coastal events. The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a wind advisory in effect until noon HST (5 p.m. ET). An advisory means that “sustained winds of at least 30 miles per hour or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected. Motorists should use extra caution.”At least three people were injured in the winter storm, which prompted Oahu Mayor Kirk Caldwell to declare a warning of “all hands on deck” and advise residents in certain areas to stay at home. Electricity interruptions have also affected thousands of people, according to officials.More on Geek.com:Freezing Rain Creates ‘Ghost Apples’ in Michigan OrchardPhotos: Niagara Falls ‘Freezes,’ Transforms Into Winter WonderlandWatch: Alligators Freeze Themselves in Place and Pokes Snouts Out of Ice to Deal With the Cold Snow is also forecast for Haleakala Summit through noon today.Video captured by Kimberly Espania and posted by MauiWatch on Instagram shows roads at the Polipoli State Park blanketed in white.
