first_img25 October 2012 South Africa is ready to host a successful 2013 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament, President Jacob Zuma said at the final draw for the 29th edition of Africa’s biggest soccer festival at the International Convention Centre in Durban on Wednesday evening. From 19 January to 10 February 2013, the world’s eyes will once again be on South Africa as 16 of Africa’s best footballing nations battle it out for the continental crown. South Africa had a proud track record of hosting wonderful sporting events, Zuma said at Wednesday’s draw, adding that the 2013 Afcon finals would “be a timely reflection on the legacy of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, which we hosted successfully with the support of the African continent.” Zuma extended his special congratulations to Cape Verde, who will be appearing in the tournament for the first time after eliminating one of the giants of African football, Cameroon, in the qualifiers. Zuma said the tournament would be a special occasion for South Africa as Bafana would be making a return after a four-year absence from the continental competition. Zuma had earlier, during the draw, brought a sigh of relief to South Africans when he drew underdogs Cape Verde as Bafana’s opening match opponents. The host team was drawn in Group A with Cape Verde, Morocco and Angola. These four teams will be based in Durban. Group B, which will be based in Port Elizabeth, comprises Ghana, DRC, Niger and Mali. Defending champions Zambia are in group C with Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and Nigeria. These teams will based in Mbombela, Mpumalanga. The “group of death”, group D, comprises Ivory Coast, Togo, Algeria and Tunisia. Afcon local organising committee (LOC) chairman Mwelo Nonkonyane gave an assurance to the Confederation of African Football, the 16 participating national teams, South Africans and the entire African continent that they would not let them down. “We wish to assure the African football [fraternity] that we use football as a tool to uproot our people from the circles of poverty, war and diseases to promote peace in Africa. “We can assure you that as you go home to start preparing for this tournament and come back to battle for this coveted trophy, you will find the LOC ready to deliver a seamless tournament,” Nonkonyane said. “We’ve put in place plans around team transport, training venues, team hotels, including team security and escort mechanisms, and spectator experience that will ensure that every single stadium has an offering that is unique.” Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

I acquired these to set my hair in a big pineapple bun to sleep in at night. The elasticity lasts about two or three makes use of, and then it receives looser and looser and right after one or 2 weeks they are no longer that width – they extend out so a lot they’re just a frequent scrunchy. The selling price is great although, so i commonly purchase 4 of these (four in overall, two orders) every month. I may well have to stop although as that seems a bit wasteful.Good for a week or two, does not very last extensive. I acquired these to set my hair in a big pineapple bun to sleep in at night. first_imgRelated Posts AI: How it’s Impacting Surveillance Data Storage Follow the Puck Tags:#AI#artificial intelligence#Autonomous#empathy#infrastructure#mobility#ReadWrite Labs#Sensum#transportation#V2X#vehicle to everything Transportation will never be the same once our machines know how we feel.We are all entering a wholesale, global disruption of the way people move from one place to another.  More than any other change in this sector, the one that is likely to have the most significant impact on human society is the rise of autonomous (i.e., self-driving) vehicles. The transportation industry, historically dominated by a handful of large vehicle-manufacturing brands, is evolving into an ecosystem of ‘mobility services,’ underpinned by artificial intelligence (AI). A major step in the development of AI is to give it ‘empathy,’ allowing our physiological and emotional states to be observed and understood. This connection will mostly be achieved by connecting to wearable or remote sensors, the same way that fitness bands allow our physical state to be monitored.By feeding this sensor data into AI systems, we can train them to know how we feel and how to respond appropriately. This kind of empathy can also be enhanced by giving AI its own artificial emotions, imbuing it with simulations of feelings.Empathic technology will have no small effect on the mobility sector. How might an empathic vehicle look?Safe TravelsThere is already a growing body of research from top-tier auto companies into what kind of empathic interactions will protect drivers, passengers and everyone around them from harm. To investigate this, biometric sensors, cameras, and microphones are being used to detect:Fatigue & drowsiness: e.g., monitoring head or eye movements, posture or heart/breathing rate.Distraction: e.g., gaze detection to ensure the driver is watching the road.Intoxication: e.g., using infrared optics or analyzing voice or breath.Medical incidents: e.g., detecting a potential cardiac event from a wearable heart-rate sensor.A Comfortable JourneyAfter ensuring the safety of the humans in the system, empathic tech can be employed to optimize the ride experience. There is a universe of auto-suppliers you’ve probably never heard of, who build all the components and systems that end up in the well-known vehicle brands. They are leading the way to a more empathic ride, with innovations such as:Environmental controls: e.g., lighting, heating, AC, sound and olfactory output, customized to suit your current mood.Physical controls: seat position, engine configuration, etc.Humanising AI feedback: the virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri that are invading our homes and phones are also reaching into our vehicles. With empathic AI we can tailor their feedback to suit our preferred style of interaction. An Entertaining RideNow that our customer is safe and comfortable, they can benefit from AI that knows how to push the right emotional buttons at the moment. This is particularly likely to apply to the onboard music and infotainment systems. Other subtle ways in which a vehicle could be designed to optimize the thrill of the ride include offering to increase the engine’s power output when the driver is feeling confident and happy. The New Norms of Autonomous SocietyAn autonomous vehicle doesn’t exist in a bubble. Much of its intelligence is based on sensing its environment and making rapid judgments about how to act. Each vehicle will also be integrated with a global network of systems, able to share information ranging from weather forecasts to road obstructions. By connecting each vehicle to its neighbors and the wider world, we will see the emergence of a new type of ‘social’ structure with its own norms of behavior. This AI-driven ‘society’ will involve interactions not just between the vehicles and their drivers or passengers, but also with onboard devices, nearby pedestrians, other vehicles, and their occupants, as well as surrounding infrastructure. The etiquette and rules of what the market calls ‘vehicle-to-everything’ (V2X) communications will establish themselves as we gradually let go of the wheel and hand our mobility needs over to ‘the machines.’This mobility ecosystem is also likely to share data and processes with the rest of the AI in our lives, such as in our smartphones and home-automation systems. If coordinated correctly, this unified data architecture would allow empathic vehicles to know us much better, behaving ever more like a trusted friend. This is not just a technological problem; it’s a monumental user-experience challenge too. Gradually increasing the empathic capability of the system will support the evolution of the transport experience towards one that is not only safe and comfortable but also delightful. The future of mobility is emotional.Editor Note & Disclaimer: The author is a member of the Sensum team, which is an alumnus of our ReadWrite Labs accelerator program. center_img Ben Bland A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaceslast_img read more

first_imgEleven militants used two cars and one motorbike to carry out the attack on a bus carrying Amarnath pilgrims on July 10 last year in Kashmir and “the spot and the target was picked just days before the attack”, says the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that filed a chargesheet against the accused on Monday.Speaking to The Hindu, SIT head and Superintendent of Police (SP) Tahir Ashraf Bhatti said, “The Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, including locals, and its head Abu Ismail, picked the spot and the target just a few days before the attack. It was executed by four terrorists directly, with others being assigned their role to provide logistics and keep an eye on the movement of the yatri bus.”According to the 1,500-page SIT report, the bus got disconnected from its security cover first at Pantha Chowk, where the pilgrims picked up more associates, and “later developed a technical snag”, which was attended to at Awantipora. The movement of the bus was monitored “constantly by the militants before it reached Anantnag’s Batengo area”, where militants opened fire. The militants used code language on phones to convey the status of the bus, and if it had security cover.According to the charge sheet, Pakistan-based militants Abu Ismail alias Haroon, Maaviya and Furqan were part of the attack. All the three were killed in encounters in Srinagar and Qazigund last year.Of the 11 accused, four persons, including a juvenile, have been arrested. “Three are still absconding,” it said.last_img read more
