This is a team that is unquestionably in need of a big shakeup this … The Giants are heading towards a pivotal offseason.Yes, again. After a 98-loss season in 2017, the Giants “ran it back” with a few upgrades in 2018, and, clearly, things didn’t work out.Once the Giants’ already minuscule chances of making the playoffs this year evaporated at the end of August, San Francisco has been the worst team in baseball, losing 11 straight games with Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to the Braves.
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The first step in corn stand uniformity is getting the corn planter maintained and adjusted to plant the corn crop as uniformly as possible. The next step in the uniformity equation is achieving uniform emergence.Germination is simply the process that allows a seed to sprout or begin to grow. Although the definition is simple, the actual process is quite complex. The germination of a corn seed requires soil moisture to “reawaken” the seed and adequate temperatures to speed along the enzymes and chemical reactions that allow the cells in the corn plant to grow and reproduce.Corn growers know the importance of germination but often don’t believe they have much of a roll in that process. Growers tend to be disconnected from the germination process because they cannot control the rainfall, sunshine and/or temperatures. But, in all accounts where and how a grower places the corn seed greatly dictates the ultimate success and/or failure of germination. The success of germination is achieved by providing the corn seed with adequate and uniform moisture, adequate and uniform soil temperature and adequate and uniform soil-to-seed contact. Please pay close attention to the fact that no values are assigned to these requirements. Germination can occur at various temperatures and soil moisture conditions, but the grower’s goal is to achieve uniformity. Research continues to show that once a corn seed spikes through the soil, all its neighbors need to spike through within a 48-hour window, to keep from becoming a weed. Therefore if conditions are uniform (not necessarily perfect) the chance of having a uniform germination and ultimately uniform emergence is greatly improved. How do the three requirements impact the germination process? Adequate and uniform moisture in the seed zoneCorn kernels must absorb water equaling about 30% of their weight before germination can begin. Therefore, there must be enough water present in the soil. Too little water stalls the process while too much water can lead to premature death by rotting. Uniformity of soil moisture is necessary so all seeds have the same access to water. Adequate soil moisture begins with uniform planting depths greater than 1.5 inches to avoid uneven soil moisture caused mainly by tillage patterns through the field. The other consideration with moisture absorption is the temperature of the water that is absorbed. A majority of the water is absorbed into the corn seed within the first 36 hours. If the first “drink” of water is extremely cold, it causes the seed to go into shock and disrupts the emergence process. Therefore to aid in uniform emergence ensure the soil water that the seed is absorbing is above the 50 degree F level. Adequate and uniform soil temperature in the seed zoneAdequate soil temperature is defined as being greater than 50 degrees F at the two-inch depth. Soil temperatures need to be above 50 degrees F for corn to germinate uniformly and quickly. Temperatures below that level will slow the process and cause germination to be variable resulting in loss of yield. Once again a planting depth greater than 1.5 inches may lead to lower soil temperatures compared to shallower planting, but the temperatures will be more uniform, which is the goal. Potential causes for variability in soil temperatures in the seed zone include different soil types and uneven residue distribution. Variable soil temperatures are most often caused by uneven planting depth. Adequate and uniform soil-to-seed contactIn order for kernels to absorb moisture quickly and uniformly, the soil must be firmly packed around the kernel. Anytime there is an air pocket around the seed, moisture uptake is slowed and ultimately the germination process is severely hampered. To achieve adequate soil-to-seed contact, ensure the double disk openers create a “V” shaped trench. The closing wheels system is centered over the row and there is adequate down force to gently pack the soil around the seed. Obstacles to adequate soil-to-seed contact include cloddy fields caused by working soils too wet, open planting furrows caused by planting in soils too wet or by too much residue being present in the planter furrow.Uniform germination leads to uniform emergence that leads to uniform plants and ultimately high yield potential. When looking at the success of the planting operation and the germination appears to be less than desired, begin looking at the three fundamentals of germination to determine what can be fixed for future success.

The hot, dry early fall weather is causing the moisture levels of soybeans to be lower than they should be for optimum yield. In this week’s DuPont Pioneer Field Report, the Ohio Ag Net’s Ty Higgins visits with Field Agronomist Ryan Terry about the implications of harvesting low moisture soybeans.
Today Instagram is adding real-time notifications to its API. What this means in practice is that developers will now be able to get instant notifications when new photos are added by specific users or with specific tags, geo-tags or a more general location. Developers can now add subscriptions to these notifications to their apps. For example, in the announcement Instagram’s Kevin Systrom uses the example Foodspotting importing all of a user’s photos from Instagram whenever the tag #food is used.Instagram competitor PicPlz beat Instagram to market with an API earlier this month. Instagram quickly followed suit with tis own API. Systrom writes in the announcement, “At the end of the day, though, we really wanted to push our API to the next level to support a new kind of interaction around photos – one that supported the real-time nature of the content that people create on Instagram.”A demo of the new API can be found here. It’s a simple display of Instagram photos being added in real-time. It uses Node.js to enable live updates. The source code for the demo can be found on Github. Systrom emphasizes how powerful this real-time API could be when paired with systems like Tornado and Node.js.What does the new API mean for the future of Instagram? More integrations. In addition to Foodspotting, Thefancy.com and Dropbox are also using the API already.Systrom also writes that Flipboard is working with the API but “we’re not quite ready to talk about it, all we can say is that it’s very cool, and we believe it’s a superlative experience for Instagram and Flipboard users.” Tags:#APIs#hack klint finley Why You Love Online Quizzes Related Posts 7 Types of Video that will Make a Massive Impac… How to Write a Welcome Email to New Employees? And we find a trucker…At the suggestion of Lee Jackson of Jackson Tree Service who had cut the trees, we hired Tim Chick of Chick Forest Products in Gorham, Maine (no web site, but Tim can be reached at 207-632-3062). Tim would select the best logs and haul them to Hurd Lumber, and then return to take the remaining logs for pulp. Here’s a video of Tim cutting the trunks to log lengths and loading the logs on his truck. Can we turn our trees into lumber? So what to do with 30 plus reasonably good quality mature pine trees?Just like previous generations, why not use some of the lumber in EdgewaterHaus? In fact, why not use it in one room — say, the three-season room that overlooks the river? We had long ago decided that we wanted this room to have a very different look and feel than the rest of the house. We wanted it to have a greater connection to the outdoors. Using knotty-pine boards for the interior walls and ceiling, with boards milled from pine trees harvested from our lot, would give the room the sense of a traditional Maine waterfront camp, and form a continuing bond to the land from which EdgewaterHaus would rise. Maine is mostly forestMaine is known as the Pine Tree State, with over 90 percent of the state forested. White pine trees tower over other the deciduous and coniferous trees that cover 17 million forested acres across the state. Forest products have played a prominent role throughout the history of Maine, from the early wooden shipbuilding industry along Maine’s rugged coast line, to paper mills still in operation in central Maine. No wonder the pine tree is prominently displayed on the state flag. Many of the lakefront cottages I remember visiting when I was a kid had been built from pine trees growing on the site. The land was cleared, the pine logs brought to a nearby family-operated sawmill, and the lumber hauled back to the site to be used to frame and sheath the building and cover interior spaces. Many of these cottages still stand today with their exterior painted clapboards and unfinished knotty pine interiors that have aged from an initial creamy white color to a rich golden tan. Here’s a video showing the logging operation. In search of a sawmillBut how to get the logs milled into lumber? The tiny sawmills that once dotted the area have long disappeared. (For more on this topic, see Local Food, Local Wood.)I tried to find someone with a portable sawmill. I have often seen Wood-Mizer brand portable sawmills being sold at the woodworking shows I occasionally attend. I did meet with one individual who operated a portable sawmill and could cut the logs on site, but the logistical challenges seemed ill-suited to the task. The benefits of milling the lumber on site were negated by questions of how to load these big logs onto the portable mill, how to get rid of the bark and log off-cuts, and how to remove the remaining unsuitable logs from our lot.So I explored hauling the logs to one of two remaining saw mills within a 50-mile radius of EdgewaterHaus. One mill was running at capacity to fulfill commercial contracts and not interested in my small job. However, Hurd Lumber Company, a third-generation family sawmill located along the Maine-New Hampshire border in tiny Acton, Maine, was willing to do the job. [Editor’s note: Roger and Lynn Normand are building a [no-glossary]Passivhaus[/no-glossary] in Maine. This is the 13th article in a series that will follow their project from planning through construction.]We hired Jackson Tree Services to cut down over 30 mature pine trees along the north and west perimeter of our lot. I was saddened to watch these stately pine trees topple over one by one, felled by the relentless bite of owner Lee Jackson’s chainsaw and his strong-armed supporting crew, Dan and Justin. But moving EdgewaterHaus’ footprint as far from the steep banks on the east and south sides of our lot was a critical priority. That placed the house footprint squarely in the midst of these trees. These trees had to go.Lee and his crew hustled tirelessly throughout a warm, breezy, overcast day with intermittent showers, never stopping except to sharpen the chainsaw or rig guy-lines from the chipper to safely cut the next tree. I believe you could put a dime on the ground along the centerline of where the tree would fall, and Lee would drop the tree dead on top of it. All the tree limbs went into the chipper, which broadcast the bite-size pieces of wood and pine needles across the lot where they will decompose to add to the organic matter in the soil. Tesla will be rolling not one but two new varieties of photovoltaic (PV) panels sometime this year, according to a number of published reports. Details remain skimpy.Last fall, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced the development of the Solar Roof, a PV module hidden beneath a layer of tempered glass that could be manufactured to look like one of several varieties of roofing tiles. Citing a tweet from Musk, Bloomberg Technology reported that the Solar Roof will be offered for sale in April 2017 (this month), with installations beginning by the middle of the year. Then, on April 9, the news website Electrek offered details about a second type of PV panel from Tesla. These are low-profile modules apparently mounted on top of a roof like a conventional array but with no visible hardware. Tesla describes them as “sleek,” with an “integrated front skirt” that keeps the rack and mounting hardware out of sight.Reports said that each PV panel would have a top output of 325 watts. They will be manufactured by Tesla partner Panasonic at Tesla’s new Buffalo, New York, “Gigafactory 2.” (Panasonic already offers a 325-watt panel with an efficiency of 21.76%, Bloomberg said.) The original Electrek article is no longer available, apparently taken down by the news outlet for reasons that were not explained. And a Tesla spokeswoman declined to answer questions about either the new PV panels or the Solar Roof.“Unfortunately we aren’t able to share any additional details on solar roof or panels at this point,” the company said.

Director General of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Foundation, David Ward, has lauded Jamaica on its “impressive” road safety model, which he said, can be emulated by other countries. “It’s extremely impressive how well you have structured your road safety effort over the last 20 years and it is an exemplar to many other countries of how to do it,” he stated. Mr. Ward was addressing a press conference hosted by the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) on Thursday (April 18), at Jamaica House, to provide highlights of the visit of His Royal Highness, Prince Michael of Kent. The FIA Foundation Director General is part of the delegation, which arrived with the Prince on Monday (April 15), for a five-day working visit, as part of the NRSC’s 20th anniversary celebrations. In commending the work of the NRSC, he said that through the Council’s efforts, Jamaica is “doing extremely well,” surpassing even the United States in its quest to reduce road fatalities. Jamaica has lowered road fatalities to 9.2 per 100,000 population compared to 11.4 per 100,000 in the US. “You are beating the United States hands down,” Dr. Ward said. “You should be very proud of what’s been achieved.” Mr. Ward also pointed out that the elements of Jamaica’s road safety programme, such as the “engagement from the top, the multi-sectoral and inter-ministerial approach, the results that are being delivered, and the targets that have been set and exceeded, is what is considered to be best practice internationally”. “Many industrialised countries in Europe and so on, are not doing the organisational side as well as you are,” he stated. He noted, however, that much more can be done in terms of enforcing certain safety measures such as the wearing of seat belts and helmets. Vice Chairman and Convenor of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Dr. Lucien Jones, described the reduction in fatalities the country has achieved, from 18.6 per 100,000 in 1993 to 9.2 per 100,000 in 2013, as “dramatic and almost miraculous”. “This is the single most important fact which is driving all the excitement and the celebration of our 20th anniversary, because it means that many Jamaicans have been spared from dying and from being injured in our roads because of the work of the NRSC,” he stated. Director of Road Safety, FIA Foundation, Adrian Walsh, who is also part of the visiting delegation, praised Jamaica on its excellent data collection system on road safety. “Most road safety data collection systems, all they do is focus on casualties. In other words, they focus on negatives. Yours actually goes a step further and this is what’s clever and it’s not replicated everywhere in the world,” he stated. He pointed out that the United Kingdom (UK) has only just adopted this process, which Jamaica has been engaging in for quite some time on a national level. “You look at where the problem is, what the problem is and you then get the communities to help to solve the problem, and that’s innovative in itself and its worth highlighting,” he noted. For his part, Co-Chairman of the NRSC’s Below 240 Project, Earl Jarrett, said the visit of the Prince “has certainly given the drive to improve road safety in Jamaica a significant boost”. The FIA Foundation is an independent UK registered charity, which supports an international programme of activities promoting road safety, the environment and sustainable mobility, as well as funding motor sport safety research. The Prince departs the island today (April 19). CONTACT: ALECIA SMITH-EDWARDS
