Injured suspect arraigned with murder of taxi driver


first_imgOne of the suspects involved in the shooting to death of a taxi driver in the presence of his wife and child at Eccles, East Bank Demerara in January appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday.The suspect, 28-year-old Rodrick Thomas of Williams Street, Kitty, made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to the indictable charge. The police stated that on January 22, at Eccles Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Kelvin WaltersThe accused, who is nursing a broken leg as a result of the shooting incident was represented by Attorneys, James Bond and Siand Dhurjon.Thomas was jointly charged for the capital offence along with Devon Allen who isdead Kelvin Walterspresently hospitalised.Thomas’ attorneys contended that their client sustained the broken leg as a result of an accident in the interior and more so, he is not guilty of the shooting incident.It was reported that Walters, of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD), was shot to his face by two men on a motorcycle.The ex-solider, who also worked as a bodyguard for a mining company was shot after he reportedly refused to pull his car over in the corner as was requested by the armed men.After being shot, Walters reportedly slammed his motor vehicle into the two men on the motorcycle resulting in them receiving injuries.The suspects fell onto the roadway but hurriedly got up and escaped on foot leaving behind the motorcycle and the weapon. Walters was pulled from his motorcar and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The murder accused is expected to return to court on February 15, 2019.last_img
