STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Wilmingtons Audrey LaConte Participates In Prestigious Band Camp


first_imgLOWELL, MA — More than 130 young people from across the Northeast will enhance their skills as musicians when they participate in UMass Lowell’s Mary Jo Leahey Symphonic Band Camp this summer.Audrey LaConte, of Wilmington, will be among those participating in the program, which will be held from Sunday, July 14 through Saturday, July 20 on the university’s campus.The 23rd annual camp offers students entering ninth grade from freshman of college a weeklong immersion in concert band, music ensembles, classes and performance workshops, all designed to spark their creativity and develop their virtuosity. Throughout the week, each student will participate in the large concert band ensemble and in one or more of many smaller ensembles. Students will learn about classical and jazz genres, and choose from a menu of electives that span a wide variety of musical interests. Sessions will be led by UMass Lowell music faculty and guest instructors, while the university’s music students and alumni will serve as camp mentors.The program will culminate with a free concert on Saturday, July 20 at noon that is open to the public. The concert will be held at UMass Lowell’s Durgin Hall, located at 35 Wilder Street, Lowell, on the University’s South Campus. Free parking is available across the street from the venue.The summer camp was created and designed by Executive Director Debra Nicole Huber, a 1989 graduate of UMass Lowell, to provide a window into choices and opportunities in music for children and was established by Mary Jo Leahey, a 1937 UMass Lowell graduate who was a beloved music teacher and philanthropist.
